Oral Orientations

Waterside Condo is not beside any waterbody.

Catherine was holding on to my mounting boards (A1 Charcoal Black) which she had previously bought for the entire class. She said that she had no engagements today so I decided to collect the boards from her 'dungeon-cellar' cum storeroom which is coincidentally undergoing renovation.
Since this is my first visit to her swanky condominium, I had some trouble locating the place even though she had given me a thorough and detailed instruction. (Probably due to the fact that I had forgotten half of it and I left the scribbled notes at home) So I was wondering around the Geylang River, when I decided to follow Mr Tay's (Drawing class tutor) sagely advice, "A person who asks for directions will never need a map" or something like that.
I saw a jogger passing by and inquired about the correct way to Waterside Condo. He gave me the finger and resumed his jogging. (Of course this is just a farce concocted to add a certain 'shock value' into my post. A desperate attempt, no doubt) The finger was, duh pointing towards the area where I would find Waterside.
Blissfully I walked a blistering distance towards the affirmed direction only to painfully discover later that the building he claimed was Waterside turned out to be Waterplace. So the moral of the story kids, is that when you ask for directions, select a suitable candidate with a credible, intelligent outlook.

PS: Referring to the post, ASKme.com I finally understand why people keep asking me for directions. :P HA ha ha

Every cloud has a silver lining

GoEnglish.com

I saw an old friend today. He was from my primary school. I remembered his name. (surprised? I don't forget everyone's names) He said that he was serving National Service(NS) and he has been posted to the Singapore Armed Forces Military Band Unit. We reminisced and talked about how our lives have progressed since we last met.
He told me that he would be studying in the National University of Singapore after his stint in NS. He had been successfully inducted into their pyschology course. This particular news of course left me depressed. Why?
I have been distraught since I received the results of my 'A' level results, which happened about two years ago. Although I had gained a full certificate, my grades were substandard and bordering on certain failure. I had of course expected to receive such grades due to the fact that I had an absolutely ghastly time learning maths in junior college. It was a miracle that I had even passed the above mentioned(eeek mathS) subject.
The point is that my friends have moved to greener pastures. My junior college mates and my other friends are getting degrees while I am getting a qualification on par with the 'A' levels. Honestly this setback hurts and I feel envious of their success.
Despite this I know that every cloud has a silver lining. I may have missed the opportunity to enroll in University. However I know that by gaining a place in Digital Media Design, I have the chance to bring to life my dreams of becoming an animation artist/ cartoonist. I was fearful before that I lacked the talent but now, under the extenuating circumstances, I have nothing to lose. And if I make it, I have everything to gain.

SARS

Eunice pointed out to me that if I wanted the music to stop playing, all I had to do was leave out the loop. Oh...in the words of Homer(again, the guy from 'Simpsons' not the author of the longest poem ever..) D'oh.
Entailing that, there is no school today because we are enacting a Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)drill. In a scenario where there is an outbreak of SARS in Singapore we are confined to our houses and our lessons will be conducted online. Hopefully the disease will not find itself in Singapore ever again. As they say, better to be safe than sorry.

For more information on
SARs.

I've changed the background music. Its a midi of 'blue fields' from Final Fantasy 8.

Background music

I've been learning some basic html and I've decided to embed a background music. The tune is a midi playing the introduction of LucasArts 'The Curse Of Monkey Island' ( The Only Pirate Adventure That Asks The Question: What's Sharper, Your Sword Or Your Wit?) Its one of my all-time favourite adventure games. The entire music is looped so it'll keep on playing till your hair balds. This is due to the fact that *heh* yours truly is still learning how to create a link to stop playing that damn music. Anyway after this rather spectacular :X development I might add links to my friends blogs some time soon. This site is still under progress. In the words of Homer( the cartoon character not the ancient greek author) Woo Hoo!

Pika Pika?
I prefer solitude to social gatherings. Its true, I like spending time alone rather than indulging in conversations.
Its peculiar, that whenever I'm alone and enjoying the comforts of anonimity, strangers readily approach me to make inquiries.
I've had experiences where two China women, an elderly chinese man, an indian lady, a professional office employee, tourists asking me for directions. Sometimes they ask in their native language which bewilders me. I've been mistaken for a Chinese man more than once.
When I'm drawing my sketches in public, passers-by initiate discussions with me. Futhermore when I'm playing badminton, juggling the ball on my racket, I get invitations to play.
Its uncanny, whenever I'm in recluse, I get intervened by foreigners. Maybe I stick out like a sore thumb when I'm "All By Myself"(I wonder who sang that song?)
Well whatever cosmic reason compels strangers to me - I will never know. OR it could be just the ramblings of a completely delusional mind....haha :/

Personal Perspectives

Eunice examines her shading.
In the extreme right corner is Romeo's butt. Its the truth...

Personal Perspectives 2

Forget Me Not?

Sigh....
I had an appoinment with two of my ex-NS (National Service) buddies to play soccer in the evening, yesterday, at West coast. We retired from the game at 10 pm and went ahead to have some refreshments at MacDonald's located nearby in Clementi Central. During our conversation I was acknowledged by an old friend of mine. (from my primary school days)
She said, "Hi Hisyam..."
And of course I replied "HI...(long pause)"
The problem was that I had forgotten her name! Moreover I was wearing yellow shorts and smelled like cat poop. I was really embarrased. Admittedly, I have a habit of forgetting peoples' names even though I can recall faces well. So after our brief exchange I resumed talking to my other friends.
A few minutes later, we said our goodbyes and shuffled for the exit when I coincidentally met another past acquaintance. (This time from my junior college days) Naturally we traded short interludes of our lives. Naturally too, I hadn't the slightest idea what his name was either...
Later while waiting for the west bound train to arrive, I remembered his name. Syafiq. I felt a twinge of guilt that I had omited my friend's name in my rather casual reply. (I'm referring to the former, my primary school classmate) SO I made my way back to MacDonald's to seek her again - all the way from the MRT station. I had only twenty minutes left until the last train service for the day.
I saw her sitting in the corner but I marched straight into the toilet without a glance in her direction. I can't talk to her in my yellow shorts and reeky shirt! A quick change of clothes and a look in the mirror and I was out again - stink and all.
I apologised to her and told her blatanly that I had no idea what her name was.
"Yan Ru".
She revealed that she remembers each and everyone's names. Where they had sat and that our mentor had married and changed her maiden name etc
Yan Ru definitely made me look bad even though that wasn't her intention. She has an absolutely perfect memory.
How do these people do IT?
On my way home, (yeah - the story's not over yet) I made a pit stop at 7-11. Purchased a drink and carried on walking when I stumbled onto, yet another 'blast from the past' friend. (Former NS colleague). Yeah - I don't have a clue what's his name too. Sigh...
In conclusion I have had an unforgettable Friday the 13th. This one's gonna haunt me for the rest of my life.

Perplexing Perspectives

Blk P. South Exit.
We had an outdoor assignment for drawing class today. We were given the task to draw NYP's blk P in perspective. Personally, I felt that it was very hard to draw the buildings accurately. The vanishing points lived up to its namesake, they were nowhere on my sheet of paper. (This is a joke. It is true and I find it funny...Nobody understands my jokes)To make matters worse we were observed by passers by who often had some creative criticism and pi$$ant comments to share. I managed to draw only two images and they look horrible. The bad news is we have to hand in five good perspectives by next Wednesday!

Smallville Returns

One of my favourite shows on TV is being broadcast on Starworld, every Thursday night at 8pm. (+8 GMT). Its the pilot episode where we see Smallville, (POP 25001. I saw the billboard...kinda like product placement ) being bombarded by asteroids. In the midst of the asteroids is a birth pod, occupied by none other than Earth's greatest Superhero. This is the episode to watch! I feel nostalgic watching the premier again. It felt like being introduced to the whole mythology all over again.
I was irked when they cut Clark's growing up phase though. Fast Forward to the present, Clark is a geek who has no idea that he is invulnerable however very aware of his super speed. How is it possible that he doesn't asks his parents why he can run faster than a speeding bullet but awestruck when he survives a car crash?
However I digress. Smallville has an excellent cast if actors who are very talented and good looking. I was hooked from the beginning when Tom Welling gazed wistfully at Krisin Kreuk, wishing that he could be with her. (Lana has a boyfriend though. Someone from the football team. A jock and a cheerleader - ideal couples, at least in High School society). Sam Jones III and Aliston Mack play chums who help Clark investigate bizzare occurences in Smallville. Michael Rosenbaum shaved his head to act as would be villain, Lex Luthor. Annette 'O' Toole and John Schneider are convincing as protective parents.
Everyone knows that Clark eventually grows up to be Superman but it is interesting to note that he said that he wanted to join the football team in order to avoid being a total loser in school. Who knew that the man of steel had girl problems, suffered the ignominy of being a social outcast, bearing secrets that threaten to overwhelm and had low self esteem? Clark is all powerful but oh so humble...the perfect hero indeed.
Look out! Smallville's back to entertain fans who are eagerly anticipating the fourth season.

Simply Sappy Scenes

Its a delusional man-eating-bird eyeing me for lunch.

Its a jungle in here

They should really start trimming the trees at NYP...
The lost world, right here in Nanyang Polytechnic. I had to take shots of living things inside the NYP campus today(creative process module). I decided against taking candid pictures of students because most of them walk like the living undead. (little joke there...) But I digress, the theme was more about flora, fauna and Uggggh! flying insects. (Think Bzzt Bzzt, I really don't like them.)In the end, I managed to catch some images of those nasty critters, some greenery and a promising picnic spot in the process. (another joke...*disclaimer: barf bags not included in this blog.)

Visual Surprise 2

The result of one smash that broke the sound barrier...
I was ill the past few days and my temperature was around 38.2 degrees celsius. Fortunately my fever subsided and now I can complete my school assignments (Big whoopie). I took a battered, worn down badminton racket together with a wrecked shuttlecock and began shooting it from different angles. Suddenly I had this idea, that setting the ball on fire would make the image more...uh surprising? Well it definitely made an acrid smell that lingered in my room for a while. (or was it my laundry) However the image is not what I had in mind so I'm gonna have to burn feather - again.
PS: Today is Singapore's National Day. Its been 39 years since we became an independent nation. Wishing all Singaporeans a 'Happy National Day!'

Simply Super Scenes

YG moves faster than a speeding shuttlecock. Its true.

The lab is closed

Playing badminton in the sports hall.

In the foreground is Yao Guang and in the
background is Zero.
Yesterday my classmate Zero invited me to play badminton with him at 10 in the morning. Since I was going to do my power point project (Module is 'Understanding Media') on Michael Jordan with Yao Guang (YG), I agreed. However Zero forgot to mention that the computer lab closes at 12 pm! So we played until 1pm and we had a bite at Mac's. (FYI: I scratched my promotion card and I won small fries. Woo hoo.) We eventually went to the lab and found it to be in total darkness. Feeling foolish we met up with Dorothy and Zero at the sports hall again, where they were watching Ridz, Eunice (pronounced as You-niece lol. OK ok I'm sorry) and Antz playing squash. It was only then that Zero dropped the bombshell of an information on me. "Thanks Zero..."

Visual Surprise

Submarine Soup
Design Fundamental Assignment 1
This is a submarine in a soup (duh). It is just one of the shots that I took. Supposedly to be a visual surprise. I don't think I'll be using this image though. Back to the drawing board?

Web Zingers

She looks at me everyday
Mary Jane Watson
Oh boy, if she only knew how I felt about her
But she can never know.
I made a choice to live a life of responsibility
A life she can never be a part of
Who am I?
I'm Spiderman given a job to do
And I'm Peter Parker
And I too have a job

-Peter Parker
Spiderman 2

I like this quote. Its very poignant and yet very honest. Peter Parker made a decision to use his powers responsibly and entailing that, he had to sacrifice his emotions for another person. Personally I feel that not many people, given the same situation, would've done the same thing. Then again, not many people have been bitten by radioactive spiders.

ME

Self-potrait
For the benefit of the viewers who have not read my profile, my name is Hisyam (Pronounced as, He-shum or something like that). I'm 21 years old and I live in Singapore. Singapore is an island that is only about 647km^2. Its located just below Johor, Malaysia. Singapore is a multi-racial nation with many cultural diversities. Currently I'm taking a full time 3 year course in Nanyang Polytechnic. I had completed my mandatory 2 1/2 year national service just a few months ago. I read sci-fi/fantasy books whenever I can. Most of the time I'm trying to improve my drawings. I don't have a preference for music but I do listen to Natalie Imbruglia's debut album more often than my other CDs. My favourite shows are Smallville, ED. I used to watch Seinfeld and Just Shoot Me. I love cartoons. Especially Spiderman, Transformers and Samurai X. I read manga too. Maybe I'll post more about me in the future. For now? Stay tuned to find out more...(dramatic cliffhanger)
